Hardanger is like a fairytale in summer, but life at Sjøtunet can be magical all year round. In autumn, the forests and mountains glow with color. In winter, our boathouses bring a sense of calm like nothing else. And in spring, the farm comes alive with newborn lambs and blooming fruit trees.
When you stay with us, you’re perfectly placed for adventures on the fjord and in the mountains—surrounded by both nature and culture.
Award-winning cider makers and food producers are just a short drive or boat ride away. Ask us about off-the-beaten-path mountain hikes, local products, and the best spots to catch trout or cod.

Get a Taste of Hardanger
If you’d like a taste of Hardanger while you’re here, we can tempt you with easy access to locally produced gold.
We’re working on equipping the kitchen in each boathouse to match our own, so you can cook the kind of meals you would make at home—without being limited by a lack of equipment. In our greenhouse, you’re welcome to help yourself to fresh herbs, and in our farm shop you’ll find jam available all year round. Our neighbors produce and sell fresh farm eggs, as well as lamb, pork, and veal, along with fruit and vegetables (in season). Just a short drive away, you’ll find even more: local vegetables and fruit, artisan cheese makers, small-scale dairies, farm butchers, baked goods, poultry, breweries, cider, and juice. Many producers also offer tours and experiences, such as cider safaris.
Local chefs—both traditional and modern—have plenty to offer. You might be surprised by stone oven-baked pizza that tastes like it came straight from Italy, or gourmet dishes served in hidden gems along the fjord. For a real taste of Hardanger, local cafés and restaurants serve classics such as potato cakes, smoked meats, minced steak, and the traditional potato dumpling known as komle.

from the fjord to the mountains
From Sjøtunet, it’s easy to feel the pull of the mountains—both in summer and winter.
If you love ski touring in mid-winter, you can even ski all the way from here to Voss. And if you’re craving a touch of winter in summer, the trip across the fjord to the Folgefonna glacier and its ski center is an adventure in itself.
In summer, farmers move their livestock from the fjord up to the mountains, and the old trails let you explore the landscape at your own pace—quiet, undisturbed, and breathtakingly beautiful. One of our favorite routes takes you into the side fjord of Fyksesundet, through the spectacular Botnadalen valley, and up to our mountain shelter at Hamlagrøvatnet.
