The family in
Sjøtunet is a traditional homestead in Rykkje in Hardanger, which has been run by the Storaas family throughout 140 years and five generations. Today we take care of sheep, raspberries, plums and overnight guests.
The farm was built in the 1840s. For nearly two hundred years, the activities here have mirrored a developing Hardangerfjord. Shipbuilding and smiths. Trade and horticulture. Shelter for both livestock and travellers. Orchards and fishing. Self supplying and large-scale production. Since our family came here in 1883, each generation has reshaped the farm here in Sjøtunet. We value this history and tradition on our way into our fifth generation.
Today, three generations live at the farm – the hosts Simen and Elisabet (5th generation), as well as grandma Torunn (4th generation) and great grandma Gyda (3rd generation). The dogs Vilma and Ulla, the cat Muskat and a small heard of sheep. Part of our farm is on the island of Kvamsøy where the sheep graze from the grass gets green until winter comes, and where most of their winter food is harvested.
